My husband relates a story where a young man was posted as an Honor Guard with the duty of watching over the body of a man who had died several days prior. This duty took place overnight within a small chapel where the man lay within an open coffin.

All was still and so quiet that one could hear a pin drop, when suddenly a loud noise coming from the dead man broke through the silence like a trumpet. The man… passed gas! Hearing this sound and not being familiar with the facts of decomposition, the young Honor Guard fled in a panic, waiting the rest of the time in front of the chapel for the relief guard to show up.

Stories like this one always bring a smile, yes? But it’s also stories like these that get me to thinking just how much like the dead man is anyone who does not have the Holy Spirit. Without Him, we are all just like the walking dead.

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient… But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. – Ephesians 2:1-2;4-5

For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ! – Romans 5:17

Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. – John 3:5-6
