1–2 minutes

I have an unfinished thought and I want to invite you to help me finish it. It has to do with this verse:

But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son,
but only the Father. – Matthew 24:36

Okay so we know that God is outside of time. Having created this universe – time, space, and everything in between (Psalm 102:24-27), time is not relevant to Him the same way it is to us (Psalm 90:4).

But my Weird Wednesday thought is… If not even Jesus Himself knows when it will be time for Him to return, doesn’t that imply that He (Jesus) has chosen to subject Himself to our timeline until that day comes? 🤔

I’d love to see your comments!

  1. I can’t answer that one 😕

    1. I’m not sure there is a right or wrong answer, just people sharing their opinions and perhaps a scripture or two 😄

  2. I disagree that God is “outside of time.” This is true only in the sense that we measure time. Time is actually an attribute of God. It is immutable, eternally unchanging and perfect (complete) just as all His attributes are. Time will continue into eternity just as it existed eternally before we started measuring it.

    1. That’s an intriguing thought, I like it and it makes sense. Can you share more on what led you this conclusion?

      1. There seems to be no specific “time” I can point to that this idea formed in my tiny brain; just that at some point it seemed reasonable to me and now I cannot see any other view as reasonable. For a more complete treatment on this idea, and not very complete at all, see https://capost2k.wordpress.com/2018/04/08/wondering-while-wandering-through-time-and-space/.

  3. “no one knows, not even… the Son, but the Father only.” I think that in His life on earth, Jesus learned things as other human beings learned them, yet Jesus was also fully God. As God He would know things that only God knows (John 16:30 – Now we know that you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; …) I think this verse he is speaking in terms of his human nature, not excercising his omniscience. So I do believe he knows the day and hour.

    1. Interesting thought! I agree that He was both fully God and fully man. So do I hear you saying that His human nature doesn’t know but His God nature does? What does that imply then about Matt. 24:36, that not even the Son knows?

I believe that God is outside of time. He created time. I believe that this verse Matthew 24:36 means what it says, that even Jesus does not know when He is coming back. Read the rest of Matthew 24: 36-44. Keep the Bible in it’s entire context.

Jesus has and always will do the will of the Father. He is seated at the right hand of God, the Father, and the Father will tell him when it is time to collect His bride/His children. If, Jesus doesn’t know, then why are we so obsessed and/or even arrogant to think we can figure out when He will return? How about leaving it alone and concentrate on today? What is His will for each of us? He even tells us not to worry about tomorrow, Matthew 6:34. We have enough to deal with with today.

    1. Thank you for sharing with us your thoughts 🤗 I know there are many who do try and figure out the hour and the day, as you point out. For me personally the weird Wednesday question was more about getting to know Jesus Himself. We know He’s an exact representation of our Father, but we also know He is His own person. To understand what He chose to subject Himself to out of love and obedience to the Father is humbling and moving, don’t you think? He gave up a lot for us ❤️

    1. Any question that gets us to dwell on and think more about Jesus is a good question 😄🙌 May your conversation with Him on this be blessed ❤️
